SE Healthcare’s Stephanie Sargent and Dr. Richard Waldman Contribute Chapter to Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America
Stephanie Sargent, VP of Product Development and Quality at SE Healthcare, and Dr. Richard Waldman, SE Healthcare Board Member, contributed the chapter The Patient Experience and Safety to Volume 46, Issue 2 of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America, June 2019, Pages 199-214.
Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America is published four times per year. Each issue focuses on a single topic in obstetrics and gynecology. This issue centers around patient safety.
The focus of Sargent and Waldman’s chapter is the impact of the patient experience on patient safety and trends that impact patient engagement. In the late 1960s/early 1970s, Dr. Waldman experienced firsthand the medical community’s strong opposition to consumer-driven efforts to take more control of the patient experience. Over the following decades, persistent efforts led by patients, thought-leader physicians and agencies such as the Institute of Medicine created the foundation of what is termed “patient-centered care”.
Now, the patient experience is not only foundational to quality and safety, it is a business imperative with the continuing shift towards value-based payments models. Sargent and Waldman suggest that the future of patient experience will be grounded in consumerism, transparency and convenience.
