Phyllis Malpas Joins SGNA Health Care Policy Committee
Charleston, SC, July 25, 2017 – Phyllis Malpas MA, RN, CGRN has joined the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) Health Care Policy Committee effective July 17, 2017. As a committee member, Ms. Malpas supports SGNA’s efforts to influence public policy regarding colorectal cancer awareness, infection prevention and advancing the goals of the Institute of Medicine’s report on the Future of Nursing.
The Health Care Policy Committee, comprised of 7 members who serve as a liaison to SGNA’s Board of Directors, communicate on awareness and activities with national GI organizations, including the Esophageal Cancer Action Network, where Ms. Malpas serves as a representative, as well as, the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, the Digestive Disease National Coalition, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the Prevent Cancer Foundation/Fight Colorectal Cancer.
Ms. Malpas has nearly 30 years of experience in the endoscopy and gastroenterology field, and has been actively involved in quality and safety initiatives throughout her career. She has been a member of the SGNA since 1987, and has served the 8000-member organization in numerous regional and national leadership roles, including President from 2012-2013 and the Director of Legislative Activities (2008-2011) on the Board of Directors. Ms. Malpas was among those instrumental in developing the Infection Prevention Champions Program developed by SGNA through her role on the Board of Directors.
Most recently, Ms. Malpas was Nurse Manager, Digestive Disease Center, Endoscopy, at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Medical University Hospital Authority. She currently serves as a Senior Clinical Consultant for SE Healthcare. Ms. Malpas received a M.A. in Business and Management from Webster University, an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences/Registered Nursing from Lakeland Community College and a B.A., cum laude, from John Carroll University in Sociology. She is a Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse(CGRN) since 1990.
